OUR CONDUCTOR
Graham Boag

Graham Boag has been involved with various ensembles as a conductor for 30 years. These have ranged from Brass Bands, Wind Bands and Orchestras both in the UK and overseas.

As a player he studied at Trinity College of Music London studying Double Bass and Classical Guitar. Following graduation, he joined the Royal Air Force Central Band where he was Principal Double Bass. He was fortunate to be able to have a freelance career as a Double Bassist across the country when time allowed. This playing gave him the opportunity to perform in the major concert halls in the UK and abroad as far as Hong Kong, America and most of Europe. It was during that time that he became interested in conducting and soon took charge of his first Brass Band.

Honing his skills as a conductor he was accepted onto the Band Studies Course run by Richard Evans, Darrol Barry and Arthur Butterworth. Studying conducting with Richard Evans, arranging and composition with Darrol Barry and further composition with Arthur Butterworth. He was also fortunate to have composition lessons with Martin Ellerby as part of the RAF’s Continuous Professional Development courses. As a composer/arranger his music for band, orchestra and chamber groups has been performed across the world.

In 2011 Graham accepted the offer to go to Oman to teach at the Royal Military School of Music where he became the Head of Brass and Double Bass teacher at the Royal Muscat Philharmonic Orchestra. The move to Oman saw a happy reunion with his former teacher Darrol Barry who was the Composer in Residence to the Sultan of Oman. After almost ten years in Oman, Graham returned to the UK in 2020.

Since his return Graham has become an active musician in the Yorkshire area and is looking forward to the next musical chapter with JFCB.
